HKUST Insurance Day Opens Up New Career Opportunities for Students

2019-02-20

The School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has launched its first Insurance Day.

Officiated by Mr. Joseph CHAN Ho-Lim, the Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Dr. Moses CHENG, Chairman of the Insurance Authority, and Mr. Andrew LIAO Cheung-Sing, HKUST Council Chairman, the event features a job fair and panel discussions attended by some of the world’s leading insurers and industry leaders.

The half-day event entitled “The Myths and Realities of the Insurance Industry” is organized mainly to help students across all disciplines at HKUST understand more about the diverse career prospects offered by the insurance sector and its vital contribution to Hong Kong’s economy.

With 13 of the world’s top 20 insurers conducting business in Hong Kong, the insurance industry employs more than 100,000 people in the city, ranging from frontline intermediaries to back-office professionals. The insurance sector is an integral part of what makes Hong Kong one of the premier financial and wealth management centers in the world.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Joseph CHAN Ho-Lim, the Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Government, said Hong Kong is an international insurance center. Insurance is about the transfer of risks, and the industry serves an important business and social function in spreading out risks, alleviating economic burden while maintaining socio-economic stability for the city.

Mr. Andrew LIAO Cheung-Sing, HKUST Council Chairman, expressed his deep gratitude to the strong support of both the industry and the HKSAR Government. “The Insurance Day provides an excellent platform to let our students understand the myriad of fascinating careers in the industry and explore various career opportunities by interacting with representatives from over a dozen participating insurance companies,” he said.

Prof. TAM Kar-Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, said “This event reaffirms our strong commitment to business-academia collaborations, to not only nurture the next generation of professional talent, but to bring them closer to the broad opportunities ahead for career advancement, as offered by different industries.”

Experts and executives from participating companies were invited to join two sessions of panel discussions on two hot topics: “Beyond Sales: Career Prospect of Insurance Industry” and “InsuranceTech”. Students were able to learn firsthand the trends that reshape the insurance landscape worldwide and the skills and knowledge they need at different stages of development.
