High-Powered Delegations visit HKUST

2007-01-17

A 12-member delegation from Zhejiang University led by its Chairman of Development Committee, Prof Zhang Jun Sheng (the former Deputy Director of the Xinhua News Agency (Hong Kong Branch)), visited The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today and signed an academic exchanges agreement between the two universities.

Prof Zhang said, “That HKUST has been able to become a leading university in the world within only fifteen years is nothing short of miraculous.”

President Paul Chu welcomed this opportunity for closer cooperation between Zhejiang University and HKUST. Under this agreement, the two universities will join hands to nurture postgraduates and PhD candidates of academic excellence.

On the same day, a ministerial delegation from Vietnam led by its senior official, Mr Tran Quoc Toan, arrived at the HKUST for a study tour. Members of this delegation included Banh Tien Long, the Vice Minister of Education and Training as well as heads of leading Vietnamese universities.

The Vietnamese Government has resolved to establish several high quality universities within the next 10 to 15 years, comparable in quality and standing to other universities in Southeast Asia, and ultimately in the world. The delegation members exchanged views with President Chu and other senior HKUST administrators on how to fashion a world class university.

In the course of its visit to the Mainland and Hong Kong, the Vietnamese delegation had toured a total of three premier universities: Tsinghua University in Beijing, Jiaotong University in Shanghai, and HKUST in Hong Kong.
