The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee Company Limited (IMOHKCL) to be the Host Institution of the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) - one of the most prominent international competitions for school students in the mathematics community. The competition will be held in Hong Kong in 2016.

Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, said the University was honored to host this prestigious event.

"HKUST has always been committed to nurturing talents, especially in the disciplines that we offer, including in mathematics. Mathematics is the backbone of science, the International Mathematical Olympiad not only enhances students and the society's interest in mathematics, innovative ideas and desire for knowledge, but also boosts Hong Kong's status as an international city. As a professional mathematician, I am particularly pleased that Hong Kong has succeeded in the bid to host this international event and HKUST is happy to be the official host. I hope our students and faculty members will seize this great opportunity to interact with our talented young guests, and make them feel at home during their stay on our campus.

"Prof Shum Kar-ping, Director of IMOHKCL said, "We are delighted to have the support of HKUST in the hosting of the IMO in 2016. The world-class facilities and campus accommodation would help bring out the very best from the contestants. We are certain the faculty, staff and students at HKUST would be a wonderful host to our guests from around the world and make a positive and lasting impression. We look forward to collaborating with HKUST to showcase the very best of Hong Kong to the world."

By collaborating with IMOHKCL, HKUST seeks to encourage and challenge gifted young mathematicians from around the world, create an opportunity for exchange among mathematicians, and promote mathematics in general. Under the MoU, HKUST will provide an examination venue and accommodations for participants and their team leaders, HKUST will also offer other assistance to facilitate the event.

The MoU was signed by IMOHKCL Director Prof Shum Kar-ping and HKUST President Prof Tony F Chan. A representative from HKUST will sit on the event's organizing committee.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is a leading world mathematics competition for high school students. The first IMO took place in 1959 in Romania, with seven countries participating and has since then expanded to over 100 countries and cities. It is held in a different place every year.
