The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) welcomed the Vice Chairman of the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr. XIA Baolong, to the campus on April 17.

Following the release of the nation’s "14th Five-Year Plan ", which aims to develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub, both the Central and Hong Kong SAR governments have provided much-needed support and assistance for the city’s development in innovation and scientific research. Accompanied by Chief Executive Mr. John LEE and Secretary for Education Dr. CHOI Yuk-lin, Director Xia was briefed by HKUST Council Chairman Prof. Harry SHUM and President Prof. Nancy IP, on the development strategy of the university. HKUST’s senior management presented an overview of achievements in talent cultivation, technological innovation, and commercialization of research. 

Director Xia’s delegation toured HKUST’s state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Aerodynamics and Acoustics Facility (AAF) and State Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies. They also had an exchange session with representatives of teaching staff and students.

Following the visit, President Ip met with media and shared updates on HKUST(Guangzhou), the first Mainland-Hong Kong cooperative university approved after the release of the "Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area". HKUST will work closely with Guangzhou campus to harness the golden opportunity presented by the Greater Bay Area, attract talent and high-tech companies from around the world, create a robust I&T ecosystem, and play a leading role in the development of higher education and innovative industry in the GBA and the country.
