2008-02-29

HKUST today unveiled its ambitious campus development plan at an exhibition starting from today to 31 March 2008 with the theme “Expansion for Excellence: HKUST’s 2020 Campus”. Models of HKUST new campus were prominently on display in the exhibition.

The proposed campus expansion is designed to better accommodate the surge in student numbers with the government-initiated four-year degree program by 2012, and to meet the educational and research goals outlined in the University’s Strategic Plan.

The exhibition started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony officiated by dignitaries including HKUST Council Chairman Dr John Chan, HKUST Acting President Prof Roland Chin, HKUST Vice-President for Administration and Business Prof Yuk-Shan Wong, HKUST Acting Vice-President for Research and Development Prof Tony Eastham and HKUST Director of Facilities Management Mr Mike Hudson.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr John Chan said that the campus development would lead HKUST to fly even higher. “We are most delighted to see this young university developing into one of the leading institutes in the world. The expansion plan represents a concrete commitment by HKUST to its mission to achieve educational and research excellence for many years to come.” Dr Chan said.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Prof Roland Chin said that the campus development plan was not only a construction of hardware, but is crucial to our conversion to the four-year degree program and to meet the goals outlined in the HKUST’s Strategic Plan. It forms part of our plan to help Hong Kong develop into an education hub and help realize HKUST’s mission of driving Hong Kong’s economic and social development.

Prof Yuk-Shan Wong briefed the media on the major items of HKUST future campus, including the Lee Shau Kee Campus, the Institute for Advanced Study, extension to the existing Academic Building, student residences, HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School at Nansha near Guangzhou, and HKUST Shenzhen Industry, Education and Research Building.

Purpose-built to provide an environment conducive to research, learning and student life, HKUST is known for the beauty of its setting at Clear Water Bay and its splendid facilities. The campus development plan has fully addressed the technical considerations with respect to statutory, structural, building services, sustainability, and traffic engineering issues. It is a campus fit for the twenty-first century.
