Biography

Professor Kam Biu LUK was appointed the Interim Director of HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) with effect from 1 January 2024.

After receiving his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Hong Kong in 1976, Professor Luk attended Rutgers University to study experimental particle physics in 1977 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1983. He was then a postdoctoral fellow of the University of Washington at Seattle until 1986 when he went to Fermilab as an Associate Scientist. Professor Luk joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley and affiliated with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1989 and moved to the Institute for Advanced Study of HKUST as the IAS Paul C W Chu Professor in 2021.

Professor Luk has been recognized for making significant contributions to particle physics. He has received numerous honors and awards including an R.R. Wilson Fellowship of Fermilab in 1986-1989, an Outstanding Junior Investigator award from the U.S.A. Department of Energy in 1989-1991, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 1990-1994. Professor Luk was a co-recipient of the W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in experimental particle physics from the American Physical Society in 2014 and the Future Science Prize in Physical Sciences in 2019. As the co-leader of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, he shared the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2016 and the High-energy Physics and Particle Physics Prize from the European Physical Society in 2023.

Professor Luk is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society.
