HKUST Students Demonstrate Their Talents in Performing Arts

2011-04-28

A group of local and international students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have organized a Talent Quest to showcase the multifaceted talents within the student community. This event is one of the five winners in the recently-launched President's 1-HKUST Student Life Awards, aimed to enrich campus life and promote cultural exchange.

The nine performances selected for the final round encompassed not only individual and group singing, but also guitar and Chinese classical guzheng recitals as well as ballet. The participants included students from Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, India and other overseas countries.

The championship was captured by Anton Cheung Ho-Yu who staged a breathtaking beat-boxing performance, combining the sounds of Chinese and Western musical instruments with talking and singing. His immaculate skill won rounds of thunderous applause from the audience.

The first runner-up went to Chen Ka-Kit with his yo-yo show. Against the light music background, he dazzled the audience with his chain of entertaining yet difficult antics, to the delight of all the viewers.

The second runner-up was the Jazz Band comprising students from the Schools of Science, Engineering and Business. The perfect blend of vocal and instrumental melodies won the heart of the listeners.

The HKUST students also carried out fund raising for the disaster victims in Japan. The funds were earmarked for World Vision for the reconstruction of the disaster-stricken areas.

HKUST President Tony F Chan noted that the Talent Quest gave new meaning to the acronym "HKUST", which can be interpreted as "Hong Kong University of Student Talents". He added that the charitable spirit of the HKUST community was also admirable.

The judges for this contest not only included HKUST professors, administrators and students, but also renowned artiste Bernice Liu.
