HKUST Presents Internationally-Acclaimed Exploration of Creativity Featuring Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in Celebration of Its 25th Anniversary!

2016-02-25

Hailed by the Financial Times as a festival with a “finely hewn sense of craft," The Intimacy of Creativity returns for its sixth season in collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which presents the annual festival.

The Intimacy of Creativity (IC) continues to explore the creative process as selected composers present and revise their chamber music compositions after in-depth discussions between composers and performers.

“HKUST is proud to feature The Intimacy of Creativity as part of our 25th anniversary celebration,” says Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST. “We believe that music is part of the holistic education that we aim to provide to our students and it can also stimulate creativity which is vital to their future success.”

New this season, The Intimacy of Creativity presents a Five Season Retrospective Concert of dynamic and engaging chamber music in this very special performance featuring principal members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, joined by previous and new IC guest artists. The concert takes place on Sunday 6 March, 2016 at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre presented as part of the 44th Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Previous Composer Fellows Ming-Hsiu Yen (IC2011), Matthew Tommasini (IC2012 and IC Associate Artistic Director), Karlo Margetić (IC2013), Andy Akiho (IC2014) and Scott Ordway (IC2015) have been selected to have their works revisited in this special event, alongside the Asia premiere of the chamber ensemble version of IC Artistic Director and Conductor, Bright Sheng’s Deep Red, featuring star marimba soloist, Pius Cheung. The program also includes the string orchestra version of Arnold Schoenberg’s heart-wrenching work, Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), conducted by Mr Sheng.

The program will be recorded for commercial release on the Naxos International label in the newly opened Lecture Theatre of Cheng Yu Tung Building on the campus of HKUST.

In April 2016, Bright Sheng is joined by the entire Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for an unprecedented three-day residency of Open Discussions and a Preview Concert on the campus of HKUST. The first-of-its-kind residency is capped off by a World Premiere Concert on Thursday 21 April, 2016 in the iconic Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Events feature guest artist and young violin virtuoso Dan Zhu, who will give the Hong Kong premiere of Bright Sheng’s Let Fly for violin and orchestra.

IC2016 Composer Fellows Robert McClure, Daniel Temkin, and Dylan Arthur Baker (USA) have been selected from over 140 composers from 30 countries for the unique opportunity to have their works featured at these special events.

The Intimacy of Creativity 2016 is supported by Dr and Mrs Helmut Sohmen and presented in collaboration with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and media partner Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).
