Development Opportunities at HKUST

2013-10-13

Chen Qi Feng is a final year undergraduate student studying in computer science and mathematics. His fields of research are computer vision and computer graphics. Four years ago, Chen Qi Feng was admitted by Tsinghua University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He finally decided to pursue his study in HKUST.

Before he is graduating from his first degree from the university, he is now awarded scholarships from 9 universities for studying his Ph.D including the Stanford University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of California at Los Angeles and University of Michigan.

Here you can find out Chen’s story.

Editor: Why did you choose HKUST?

Chen: At that time, my father wanted me to choose Tsinghua University, but the most important thing is whether the university suits me. I chose HKUST mainly because of its cultural diversity. Hong Kong provides a unique mixture of western and eastern culture that creates an international environment and allows me to connect to global minds.

Editor: What is your biggest gain in the university?

Chen: The biggest personal gain is independent thinking and critical thinking. Personally, I believe in tertiary education, mastering self-learning skills and thinking skills come first than purely acquiring knowledge. What I appreciate most is the research opportunity HKUST provides to undergraduate students. I joined the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and worked with two professors in computer vision and graphics. Also I participated in an international research program called Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS-HK) organized by HKUST and UCLA. Another amazing experience is participating in ACM-ICPC programming team at HKUST that allowed me to travel to eight different countries for the contest.

Editor: Can you tell us your exchange experience in the US?

Chen: During 2010 to 2011, when I was an exchange student at the University of Michigan. I represented the school to participate in the 2011 World Finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest, and I won the second in the world. In this game, the intensive competition sharpened my programming skill a lot. Most importantly, I find my passion and strengths in research of computer vision and graphics. I would like to do something related to images and computational geometry.

In university, Chen Qi Feng worked with professors to do research on Computer and Pattern Recognition and Gigantic Image. In both studies, Chen Qi Feng is responsible for programming work.

Editor: Can you tell us about your research project?

Chen: After I found my interests in computer vision and graphics, I started to do research with two distinguished professors in these two areas. Within first year of the research, I had a vision paper accepted by IEEE Conference on Computer and Pattern Recognition as the first author. Also in the gigantic image project, we are moving forward to making a gigapixel video instead of gigapixel images.

Editor: What is your future endeavor?

Chen: I believe that trying out more will provide me more choices. You will never know what’s fit you the best if you don’t try different things. Five years later, I want to be a professor in the United States, or teaching in Hong Kong. I like to be an entrepreneur to venture my projects.
