HKUST Confers Honorary Fellowships on Four Distinguished Individuals

Four distinguished individuals, Dr Aron Harilela, Ms Catherine Leung, Prof Francis Lui and Mr Michael Wu were conferred Honorary Fellowships by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Chairman of HKUST Council and Prof Wei Shyy, Acting President of HKUST.

Dr Harilela is the Chairman and CEO of Harilela Hotels Ltd and non-executive Chairman of Burson Marsteller in Hong Kong. He was appointed as Investment Promotion Ambassador for InvestHK in 2011 and as Justice of the Peace in 2014. As a tireless supporter of Hong Kong’s businesses and economy, he is also the Chairman of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and a Board Member of Hong Kong Community Chest. An ardent supporter of HKUST as well as other tertiary institutions, he served on the Court of HKUST for over 10 years and is now an Honorary Court Member. He has contributed to the University on development, stakeholder engagement and fundraising with his broad experience. The Harilela family is also an active donor to HKUST.

Ms Catherine Leung is the co-founder of the venture capital firm MizMaa Ventures. During her 20 years of service in JP Morgan Securities, Asia Pacific, Ms Leung has held many prominent positions spanning advisory, mergers and acquisitions, equity capital markets, debt capital markets, and debt and equity derivatives. She achieved many firsts and was named by Finance Asia “The Top 20 Women in Finance” in 2011. Apart from being one of the few female leaders in the investment banking industry, she is also an avid supporter of education and arts. Among her many roles, she is a Board Member of Hong Kong Arts Development Fund, a member of Opera Hong Kong and also a Court Member of HKUST. She co-founded an internship program HeadStart@HKUST in 2016, where she helps bridge the business community with young undergraduate students of the University.

Prof Francis Lui is now a Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor at HKUST. He joined the university as a founding member of the Department of Economics, and also served as the Director of the Center for Economic Development, Head of the Department of Economics and Associate Dean of the Business School. Having been a student to four Nobel laureates, Prof Lui is not only a prolific writer but also a passionate teacher, and an analyst and adviser of public policies. He has been the referee for 30 journals and organizations, publishing 13 books and numerous journal articles. He was also a winner of HKUST’s Franklin Prize of Excellence in Teaching in 2008, the Golden Dragon Award for Distinguished Chinese in the World and the Bronze Bauhinia Star Medal, HKSAR in 2017.

Mr Michael Wu is the Chairman and Managing Director of Maxim’s Caterers Limited, with 820 restaurants in Hong Kong and presence in over 20 different cities across the globe. Since his tenure, Mr Wu has successfully rebranded the group into a young and fashionable food chain and introduced over 30 different restaurant concepts.  He has gained many accolades for his outstanding achievements including the category and country winner for the “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2012 China”. He held many key positions at HKUST, offering advice on university outreach, internal communications, institutional advancement and knowledge transfer.
