Chia-Wei Woo Academic Concourse Named

The Academic Concourse at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has been named after its founding President, Professor Chia-Wei Woo, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the University.

Prof Woo, who has served the University for nearly 15 years, will step down on 30 June 2001. He was invited to join the University's Planning Committee in 1986, and was appointed its founding President in 1988.

The Academic Concourse was formally named the Chia-Wei Woo Academic Concourse today (29 June 2001) at a ceremony officiated by Dr the Hon Sze-Yuen Chung, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Court; Dr Vincent H S Lo, Council Chairman; and President and Mrs Chia-Wei Woo.

"Chia-Wei's dedication, visionary leadership and committed service have contributed to the rapid development of HKUST into a leading research university in less than a decade. He has built up a solid foundation on which HKUST will continue to thrive and strive for excellence," says Council Chairman Dr Vincent Lo.

To mark his retirement on 1 July 2001, Prof Woo has also been awarded the honorary titles of President Emeritus as well as University Professor Emeritus, the latter being the highest honor for an academic at the University.

Located at the center of the campus, the Chia-Wei Woo Academic Concourse is a much-traversed boulevard providing access from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium to all areas of the Academic Complex, including lecture theaters, classrooms, laboratories and offices.
