In less than ten years' time, HKUST has gained international recognition
as a premier research university, and its accomplishments in education,
academic research, technology transfer and community service have become
widely recognized. This rapid success would not have been possible without
the concerted efforts of pioneers such as founding Council Chairman Dr
Sze-Yuen Chung and founding President Prof Chia-Wei Woo, the University's
dedicated faculty, students and staff, and the community at large.
"As we enter the second decade, HKUST will build on the
success of the first ten years and make further contributions to the economic
and social development of Hong Kong and China, " says Dr Vincent Lo.
"HKUST Soars is the slogan of our 10th anniversary
celebrations. Many new initiatives and exciting plans are underway to
bring the University to still greater heights," he says.

"Many visitors have told us that HKUST is a miracle in the
history of the world's academic community. Ten years ago, people said
we were too ambitious and unrealistic, but as it turns out, we have far
exceeded the high expectations we had in the early days," says President
Woo, who is retiring in July.

Students and staff share moments of joy at the
on campus kickoff ceremony. |
HKUST 10th anniversary celebrations began on campus with a spectacular parade,
lion and dragon dances, and music and dance performances by students and
staff. This was followed by the Launching Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention
and Exhibition Centre, attended by the University's founders, Council and
Court members, donors, government officials, business leaders, corporate
partners, as well as students and faculty who have witnessed the success
story of HKUST themselves. |
| |
From April to December, the University will be hosting a wide range of celebratory
activities, including distinguished lectures, two of which will
be presented by Nobel laureates, academic conferences and symposiums, roving
exhibitions, student cultural exchanges, Open Day Carnival, alumni homecoming
dinners and cultural events. |
