Ten teams, each consisting of three to five members, participated in the semi-final of the competition. The three finalists' bridge projects will be judged in terms of design, loading capacity and aesthetic value at the championship on 20 February. The finalist teams come from Liu Po Shan Memorial College, TWGHs Yau Tze Tin Memorial College and St Paul's College. Another team that did well was St Paul's Convent School, who won the Best Aesthetic Award at the semi-final.

Organized by the Civil Engineering Students' Society of the HKUST Students' Union, the I-Bridge Competition is the centerpiece of the Civil Week, to be held from 19 to 23 February on HKUST campus.

"We hope to stimulate the interest of secondary students in civil engineering," said Gigi Cheung Ting Chi, marketing secretary of the Society. "The competition will help participants develop creativity, work in teams and try their hands at engineering design," she added.

Civil engineering is one of the most popular programs at HKUST. Undergraduate students could opt for civil and structural engineering, or specialize in civil and environmental engineering.

The Competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Hong Kong Section, and co-sponsored by HKUST's Department of Civil Engineering. Dr Christopher Leung, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at HKUST, serves as its technical advisor.

Other activities of the Civil Week include exhibitions, academic talks, a dinner with graduates and mock interviews for undergraduate students.
