Telecommunications industry has moved into the new millennium at a critical technical and regulatory turning point. The fixed wireline system is now at a crossroad of mixed protocols while the mobile wireless system is currently in its transitional phase of generation upgrading. Additionally, increasing number of economies are trying hard to find the most appropriate approach to convert the monopoly operation of telecommunications into a more efficient and market-orientated competition. As a result, the landscape of telecommunications operation and regulation has been revolutionarily reshaped.
To address the issue, the Department of Information and Systems Management (ISMT) at HKUST Business School will hold a workshop on telecom development and new strategic initiatives of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on December 7, 2000. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ITU is an international organization within which governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services. "The workshop is going to provide a precious opportunity for participants to share with senior ITU officials and other distinguished speakers on their in-sight vision to future development of telecommunications and the corresponding strategies of ITU," said Dr Xu Yan, Assistant Professor of ISMT and Coordinator of the Workshop. Topics of the workshop include the new initiative program of ITU, the 3G standardization issue, the proposed World Summit on the Information Society and the emergency communication project. The development of cellular mobile communications in Asia Pacific will also be highlighted. Details of the workshop are as follows:
