Versatile German artist Karla Gaenssler will hold her first exhibition in Hong Kong at the Library Gallery of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 8 November 2000 to 31 January 2001. Karla Gaenssler is well recognized as a sculptor, a painter, a printmaker, and an art teacher. She is known for using different kinds of materials masterfully in her works, including handmade paper, stones, and metals, provoking sensuous curiosity, astonishment, and delight. "Whether sculpture or hand-made paper compositions, the works of Karla Gaenssler cannot in any sense be considered simply decorative. Serenity takes on a serious quality, and there is something easy and natural about the majesty that is expressed in these works," said art critic Roland Berger. "The contradictions inherent in our age and in our lives are reflected in Karla Gaenssler's art as zest, on the one hand, and as the consciousness of the burden of existence, on the other," he said. Born in Rudolstadt, Germany, Karla Gaenssler received her art education at Karl Marx University in Leipzig. She studied sculpture at the Art Academy of Berlin from 1979 to 85. Since graduation, she has held many exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Saalfeld, and other cities in Germany. This is the first time Karla Gaenssler presents her exhibits to Hong Kong's art-lovers. She will visit Hong Kong and officiate at the opening of the exhibition. Details are as follows:
