Press Release   13 July 2000 Budding Engineers Build Robots at HKUST
	Top F.6 students will try their hands at designing and building robots at a summer camp organized by the Engineering School of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 13 to 17 July 2000. Entitled "Engineering-Momentum of the New Millennium", the summer camp has been designed to give secondary students a better understanding of various engineering disciplines, the career prospects of engineers, and a taste of university life. A major objective of the camp is to encourage female students to participate in the camp and consider engineering as a profession. The centerpiece of the camp is a robot design competition, to be held on Sunday, 16 July, and co-sponsored by LEGO Dacta HK Ltd. Participants will work in small teams to build and program their own robots using LEGO bricks and robotics software applications. The challenge will be to integrate their skills in engineering design, computer programming, team-building and problem-solving. All robots will compete in line-tracing, projectile motion and goal-scoring. Selected from some 400 applicants, the 153 campers are among the top students in Hong Kong and have all obtained high scores in the HKCEE. This year, 78 female students, or 51% are interested in taking up the challenge of engineering, the highest turnout since 1995 when the summer camp was launched. They will honor a camp tradition by attending a special banquet focussing on the role of women in engineering. The guest speaker will be Ms Natalie Chew, who holds a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and currently works as a Senior Client Specialist at IBM China/HK Ltd.
