HKUST Appoints Committee to Search New President

The Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has appointed a Search Committee to conduct a world-wide search for a suitable candidate to succeed Prof Chia-Wei Woo, who will be stepping down after serving in the position since 1988. The Committee is to make recommendations to the Council.

Membership of the Search Committee is as follows:

      Humanities & Social Science and Professor of Humanities
    Prof Tony Eastham, Associate Vice-President
      for Research & Development and Development and Professor of Civil Engineering
Member & Secretary : Mrs Alice P. M. Fok, Director of Personnel

The Search Committee held its first meeting last week to discuss a recruitment program for the post, and decided that the views of the Students' Union and faculty and staff of the University be sought.

The Search Committee met with members of the Executive Committee of the Students' Union today during which their views on the qualities and attributes of the future President were sought. A message has also been sent to all faculty and staff of the University inviting them to provide input to the Search Committee.

The post will be openly advertised both locally and overseas. The Chairman of the Search Committee will also be writing to leading academics and others who know the University well for nominations of suitable candidates.
