At the end of its eight-year founding phase,
the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) reviewed its
past efforts and present status and confirmed that it had stayed true to
the "objects" as stated in the Ordinance. The University's accomplishments
far exceeded the founders' anticipation. Under the leadership of the Council
Chairman, Dr Vincent H. S. Lo, the University recently completed a Mission,
Vision, and Objectives Statement that best reflects the views of all of
its stakeholders.
The drafting of the statement was a long and careful process, with contribution
from all segments of the University community. "A task force of the University
Council was appointed by the Chairman to spearhead the project. Its constituency
comprised six lay members and eight University members of the Council.
A draft statement emerged after thorough deliberations at a series of meetings,"
said HKUST President, Prof Chia-Wei Woo. "The draft statement was brought
by the deans and department heads to faculty members for discussion, and
then taken to the University Senate, Executive Committee of the Students'
Union, and an open all-staff forum for debate and revision. Then it went
to the full Council and the Court for further improvements before it was
finalized," he added.
Dr Vincent Lo noted that given the current limitation in resources,
members of the University must set priorities and focus on what it can
do best in the next phase of development. "With a clear statement of mission,
vision and objectives, one that is shared by members of the HKUST community
as a whole and, more importantly, supported by an agenda for action, I
am confident that we, collectively, will take the University to new heights,"
said Dr Lo.
