||||||||||||||||||||||
The Library of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently released a pathfinder on High-Tech Industrial Zones (HTIZs) in its web site at http://library.ust.hk/res/pf/high-tech/hightech.html. Inspired by the Government's policy to foster high-value-added and technology-intensive industries in the local economy, this reference guide is compiled to address the growing information needs in this area. Academics, policy-makers, high-tech professionals or members of the public will find it a timely resource. HTIZs refer to places where high-tech organizations aggregate to engage in R&D activities and cutting edge technologies, recruiting a high proportion of academic and professional staff. They are variously known as technology park, hi-tech city, cybercity, software park, science park, silicon something, or technopark. The US is renowned for its 50 silicon locations while Germany alone has hundreds of science parks. The scope of the pathfinder is worldwide. In addition to Hong Kong, 14 other locations are featured. They are:
It covers many library resources, including 300 news/journal/magazine articles and 140 internet sites. Many citations are provided with links to full-text articles for HKUST members. Off-campus users can obtain the documents by visiting the Library in person or through the inter-library loan services at their affiliated libraries. The layout of information varies from one region to another. Some regions give a brief overview while others group information under their well-known high-tech areas. Some featured sites, to name a few, include Silicon Valley, Route 128, and Research Triangle Park in the US; and Zhong-Guan-Cun Science City in the Chinese Mainland, Silicon Wadi in Israel, and Intelligent Island in Singapore. Hong Kong is given special emphasis as an emerging high-tech zone. Articles for Cyberport and Science Park are presented under various headings to outline the different aspects and stages of development. To keep track of this fast-changing field, the pathfinder will be updated periodically. Suggestions are welcome and can be emailed to lbref@ust.hk.
