The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
has completed the construction of the Annex to its Academic Complex. This
project was funded by private contributions. The Annex opening and naming
ceremonies will be held on 17 December 1999.
The six-story Annex is located at the southern end of the Academic Complex, and occupies a gross floor area of approximately 6,000 square meters. The Annex supports HKUST's efforts in serving industry, training professionals and collaboration with the Chinese Mainland and Europe. It facilitates university-industry collaboration by providing space for the University's R&D and technology transfer units, and the newly established Entrepreneurship Center. It also contributes to management development by housing the Executive Education Program and the Continuing and Professional Education Program, and by providing facilities for the MBA and Executive MBA Programs. Nationally, the Annex furthers the University's relationship with the Chinese Mainland by incorporating joint laboratories with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as other collaborative projects. Internationally, it supports HKUST's link with Europe by housing the Europe Institute, which includes the French Center, the German Center, and other cooperative programs. The construction cost of the Annex, which totalled around $120 million, came entirely from private sources. Donors will be present at the opening ceremony to unveil a commemorative plaque. They are: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (to be represented by Mr Paul M F Cheng); Dr Vincent Lo of Shui On Group; Mr Ronnie C Chan of Chan Tseng-Hsi Foundation; Dr and Mrs Thomas Chen; and Sir Tang Shiu Kin Fund (to be represented by Mr Richard Y S Tang). The program will include naming ceremonies at The Hong Kong Jockey Club Biotechnology Research Institute; Shui On Center for China Business and Management; Hang Lung Professional Education Center; and Tang Shiu Kin Computational Laboratory.
