New Academic Alliance Forges Closer Tie With Mainland Institution |

Peking University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and will jointly inaugurate a new Academic Alliance on 13 November 1998. The Honorable Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will be the guest of honor. Representating Peking University will be Prof Ren Yanshen, Chairman of the University Council, and Prof Chen Jia'er, President. Their counterparts from HKUST will be Dr the Honorable Sze-Yuen Chung, Chairman of the University Council, and Prof Chia-Wei Woo, President. The Alliance will be distinguished by a number of significant features: cooperative training for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, mutual appointment of adjunct faculty, joint search and appointment of new faculty, cooperative research on existing and new topics, and joint participation in the educational, economic and social development of South China. "Peking University and HKUST have already worked on a number of cooperative projects in the past," says Prof Louis Shen, Director of Planning and Coordination at HKUST. "The new Alliance creates a more systematic drive to enhance collaborative efforts in all areas. The two universities will develop a closer tie based on mutual benefits and friendship." In terms of joint activities in South China, the two universities will establish a multi-faceted research academy in the Nansha District of Shenzhen, right across the border from HKSAR, to offer executive education programs, undertake R&D projects and incubate technology-based enterprises. Peking University will also participate in the development of HKUST's Nansha Information Technology Park, supported by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation. "The Alliance will further extend our academic endeavors and help us better serve the economic and social development of Hong Kong and its region. It will help the Hong Kong Bay Area grow into a true world-class metropolis of the 21st century," says Prof Chia-Wei Woo. Details of the inauguration ceremony are as follows:
