The safe day-to-day running of departmental laboratories requires proper delegation of authority and responsibility - and each link in the chain should be fully aware of, and acting in accordance with, their specific responsibilities. These are outlined in the first chapter of the HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Manual.
Safety policy in the department is formulated by the department safety committee, consisting of the following personnel:
- the head of department;
- the departmental safety officer (DSO) and the deputy DSO;
- other faculty with expertise in specific areas (e.g. biological safety), seconded as appropriate;
- other technical staff with expertise in specific areas, seconded as appropriate.
Meetings of the committee are typically convened once a semester primarily in order to review operations and existing policy.
