Procedures for Undertaking Experimental Work in the Department

Before carrying out any experimental research, all personnel must:

  • read the relevant sections of the HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Manual;
  • produce a work plan detailing their experimental program, its safety implications as well as a risk assessment for the procedures and apparatus employed;
  • obtain approval of the work plan by their experimental supervisor and the DSO or deputy DSO (possibly under advice from the departmental safety committee or experienced safety personnel external to the department);
  • attend and pass, two courses offered by the HKUST Safety and Environmental Protection Office (SEPO) - Hazardous Waste Management and Chemical Safety for Laboratory Users - to ensure that all personnel, irrespective of their previous experience and training, are brought up to a common baseline of safety awareness. N.B. As indicated by the links above, these courses may now be taken on-line, although a test must be subsequently arranged with SEPO.

The two mandatory safety courses mentioned above must be taken and passed within two attempts. The penalty for not attending or failing a course twice in succession is exclusion from the laboratory and suspension of experimental work. Other courses such as Laser Safety or Biological Safety may also be required, depending on the experimental program or the working area - individuals will be advised of the requirement for these by their supervisor, the DSO or deputy DSO.

A copy of each work plan will be forwarded to the HKUST SEPO for further comment, suggestions and recommendations - although experimental work may commence once departmental approval has been granted. Copies of all work plans will be kept by the deputy DSO (or in the departmental administrative office).
