Where Future Mathematicians Meet

22-07-2016

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2016, hosted by the International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee Limited and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), concluded successfully on 16 July 2016.  More than 1,000 bright secondary school mathematics minds from over 100 countries and regions participated in the 10-day event. This marks the second time for Hong Kongto host this World Championship Mathematics Competition since 1994.

Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, believes that IMO is more than a Mathematics competition. “We made good use of this opportunity to build up the global reputation for Hong Kong; we attracted young, talented students from all over the world to the competition, and we were also able to promote mathematics and science education, especially among young local people. The IMO was an ideal platform to bring these messages across to the whole world. We are very proud to be the host of the event in HKUST’s 25th anniversary.”

This year, the Hong Kong team came in 9th from a total of 109 teams, marking the first time Hong Kong cracks the top 10 in the competition. The medal tally of three gold, two silver and a bronze was also a record for the city. The result shows that Hong Kong students possess immense potential in mathematics.
