HKUST Launches HK’s First Tech-Based Degree Program in Data Science and Technology

2018-09-23

The School of Science (SSCI) and the School of Engineering (SENG) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) jointly launched a new degree program in Data Science and Technology (DSCT) amid a pressing demand for data scientists in a world of data explosion. As the first tech-based data science program in Hong Kong for undergraduate students, DSCT seeks to nurture interdisciplinary and pragmatic talents who could address the needs of the society with data analytic and technical approaches.

At present, data science programs for undergraduate students tend to focus more on the business dimension - such as how to derive business and management strategies from a pool of data, and less on data engineering skills including coding, machine learning and statistic theories.

HKUST’s tech-based DSCT program however, is designed to equip students with the analytical skills of a vast amount of data from different sources via mathematical tools, data analytics and IT technologies.  Students are expected to master the basic knowledge of data analytics, programming and mathematical modeling upon completion of this program, which will help them lay a solid foundation for their future career.

Commenced in the fall term of 2018, the program has just admitted the first batch of students. Interested parties should first gain admission into SSCI or SENG.  After fulfilling the academic requirements in the first year of study, they could apply to their own schools about declaring DSCT as their major.  Admitted students would begin the program in the second year, they are required to gain 112 credits during the study.  The program offers 40 places each year.

“The application of data science is expanding in all walks of life, and demand for data scientists and engineers continues to surge. According to a report published by the Human Resource Development Working Group of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in July 2017, the most acute labor shortage for both the private and public sectors fell in the areas of data science and analytics. In China alone, manpower shortage in these sectors amounted to over 1.5 million workers in 2015.  Our program is set to meet the needs of this big data era by grooming the right talents,” said Prof. Wilfred Siuhung NG, Associate Director of Data Science and Technology Program and Associate Director of Computer Engineering Program.

“The graduates of our program has many different prospects. Data science is applied to Fintech, blockchain technology and bitcoin mining, while online retailers rely on the analysis of customer data in designing personalized promotional strategies.  Big data is also used on the medical field in finding the best cure and treatment methods.  The University will support and encourage its students to take part in internship so as to apply their knowledge in real life,” said Prof. Shingyu LEUNG, Associate Dean of Science.

HKUST will hold an Information Day on 29 September (Saturday) to introduce the University’s academic programs and admission requirement - including that of DSCT, to prospective students.  Campus facilities will also be opened on that day, students and parents are welcome to join.
