How to change the display settings to Super VGA (256 colors) under Windows

I. Check out the model of your display adapter
-
Select the Others... submenu under the HKUST PC MENU.
-
Select the Show User's PC Information option and note the name of the dispaly
adapter under the PC Peripheral Card session.
Currently we have the following types of display adapter in the campus:

II. Switch to generic Super VGA display
Apart from Mach32 or Mach64 display adapters (see appendix for the required
setup), user may choose either the generic Super VGA driver or native display
driver provided by the manufactures. It is recommended for ordinary users
to select the generic Super VGA driver as the required steps are simple
(steps that follows) while advanced users may refer to the appendix on
how to switch to Super VGA display using the native display driver.

Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.

Open the Main program group.
-
Invoke the program Windows Setup.
-
Select the Change System Settings... under the Options menu.
-
Scroll the Display options and select the Super VGA 640x480 256 colors
(or other resolution you prefer).
-
Click O.K.
-
Click the Current option or type G:\W31 when prompted to insert Microsoft
Windows 3.1 Disk #1.
-
Restart Windows.
III. Fallback procedure
In case there is any display problems after restarting the windows, you
can follow the steps below in order to fallback to the VGA display setting
and then ask CCST for assistant.

Under the C:> prompt, change directory to C:\UST\W31 (cd c:\ust\w31).
-
Type Setup and press Enter.
-
Scroll (with the up arrow) to the Display option and press Enter to continue.
-
Scroll (with down arrow) the options to VGA and press Enter to continue.
-
Press Enter to Accept the configuration shown.
-
Press Enter to keep drivers.
You should be able to work with Windows after fallback the display setting
to VGA.
IV. Appendix - Switch to Super VGA using native display driver
Ahead display adapter
-
Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
Open the Main program group.
-
Invoke the Windows Setup program.
-
Select the Change System Settings... under the Options menu.
-
Scroll the Display options and select Other display (requires disk from
OEM)...
-
Type G:\W31\VIDEO\AHEAD when prompt to insert disk.
-
Scroll to Ahead VGA 640x480 256 colors (or other resolution).
-
Click O.K.
-
Type G:\W31 when prompt to insert the Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk #3.
-
Type G:\W31\VIDEO\AHEAD when prompt to insert Ahead utility disk.
-
Restart Windows.
Cirrus Logic 54xx display adapter
-
Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
Invoke the File Manager.
-
Run G:\W31\VIDEO\CIRRUS\54xx\INSTALL.
-
Follow the instructions and specify the monitor type, resolution, colors
when prompt (e.g. Philips 7CM329, 640x480, 256 colors).
Mach32 display adapter
-
Under the C:> prompt, change drive to drive G (G:).
-
Change directory to G:\W31\VIDEO\ATI\MACH32.
-
Run INSTALL.
-
Select Install Device Drivers from the Main Selection Menu.
-
Select Microsoft Windows from the Install Device Drivers menu.
-
Enter "G" when prompted for the drive to be installed from.
-
Press Enter with the prompted directory (G:\W31\VIDEO\ATI\MACH32\WINDOWS).
-
Select Install Windows 3.1 driver.
-
Select Display drivers only.
-
Specify the Windows directory as C:\UST\W31 when prompt.
-
Exit the install by pressing the ESC key
-
Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
Run ATI Deaktop and then specify the required resolution/colors via the
FlexDesk Control Panel.
Mach64 display adapter
-
Under the C:> prompt, change drive to drive G (G:).
-
Change directory to G:\W31\VIDEO\ATI\MACH64\UTILITY.
-
Run INSTALL.
-
Run Quick Setup and then install the utility.
-
Change directory to G:\W31\VIDEO\ATI\MACH64\WINDOWS.
-
Run LOAD64.
-
Specify the Windows directory as C:\UST\W31 when prompt.
-
Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
Run ATI Deaktop and then specify the required resolution/colors via the
FlexDesk+ Panel.
Trident 8900x display adapter
-
Invoke Microsoft Windows 3.1.
-
Open the Main program group.
-
Invoke the Windows Setup program.
-
Select the Change System Settings... under the Options menu.
-
Scroll the Display options and select Other display (requires disk from
OEM)...
-
Type G:\W31\VIDEO\TRIDENT when prompt to insert disk.
-
Scroll to Trident 640x480 256 colors (or other resolution).
-
Click O.K.
-
Type G:\W31 when prompt to insert the Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk #1.
-
Restart Windows.
Zymos display adapter
Please use the generic display driver describe in section II above.
