How to view Chinese (or other language) with web browser?
In order to view Chinese (or other language) with Windows 2000, one has to set the Character Set of the browser to that particular language, for example:
Netscape: View -> Character Set -> Chinese
Internet Explorer: Internet Option -> Languages -> Chinese
Can I input Chinese with MS Office?
Yes. You can input Chinese with Office tools like Word, Excel except that there are limited Chinese fonts by default.
Should I install Windows 2000 if I am using Chinese Windows 98?
Although Windows 2000 supports multiple language, there are limited input methods and Chinese fonts available with the Chinese Language Pack. Our recommendation is to stay with the Chinese Windows system if your job nature requires to edit Chinese characters frequently.
Which language locale should I choose as system default?
If you required to edit Chinese character very often and decided to run Windows 2000 together with the Chinese Language Pack, it is best for you to configure the language locale of your Windows 2000 to Chinese. While the English language locale should have better compatibility with most of the software applications, you might have problem editing the Chinese characters with some applications such as Netscape 4.7x.
How to set default system locale to Chinese?
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Options
- Click on General tab
- At the Language settings for the system box, make sure the Traditional Chinese box is checked
- Click Set default...
- Click on the list to choose Chinese (HK) and then click OK
How to install Traditional Chinese system language?
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Options
- At the Regional Options dialog, click on General tab
- At the Language settings for the system box, check Traditional Chinese and then click Apply
- Click Input Locales tab and then click Add
- At the Add Input Locale dialog, select Chinese (Taiwan) at the Input Locale field and then select appropriate input method such as Chinese (Traditional) - New Phonetic at the Keyboard layout/IME field
- Click OK and then click OK again to finish
How to install Hong Kong Supplementary Character Set (HKSCS)?
- Install Traditional Chinese system language if you haven't done so
- Click here to install HKSCS
- At the File Download dialog, choose Run this program from its current location and then click OK
- After the download complete, the installation program will be run automatically
- At the HKSCS Support for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP dialog, click Yes to continue
- At the License Agreement dialog, read thoroughly and then click Yes to continue
- After completing installation, click OK to finish
- You are recommended to install HKSCS again if any of the Regional and Language Options of Windows 2000 is subsequently changed
How to install hanyu pinyin Chinese input method?
- Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Options
- At the Regional Options dialog, click Input Locales tab and then click Add
- At the Add Input Locale dialog, select Chinese (Taiwan) at the Input Locale field and then select Chinese (Traditional) - New Phonetic at the Keyboard layout/IME field
- Click OK and then click Apply
- Select Chinese (Traditional) - New Phonetic at the Installed input locales and then click IME Settings
- Click on the middle tab
- Select the (R) radio button and then click OK
- At the Regional Options dialog, click OK to finish
- Afterwards, you can input hanyu pinyin like wei4
- You can also get the list of characters with the same pronounciation by first select the Chinese character and then press DOWN arrow
