Electronic Commerce is widely recognized as the engine of future economic growth around the globe. To provide a secure environment in HKUST for facilitating electronic transactions on both Intranet and Internet, a Certificate Authority was first setup by ITSC in late 1997 and the 2nd phase of the campus-wide Public Key Infrastructure had been rolled out in June 2000.
With the successful experience gained, starting from January 2003, a new Certification Authority (HKUST CA) system (making use of the RSA's Keon server) has been implemented, and together with the rollout of the HKUST campus smartcard, the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is now much ready and complete to serve the HKUST community and has brought us to a new era.
Features Highlight
- A Certification Authority (HKUST CA) system has been implemented to serve as a trusted third party for issuing, managing, renewing and revoking digital certificates in accordance with practice and standard published in our Certification Practice Statement (CPS).
- Digital Certificates can be applied online via our Certificate Management System (CMS) and users can try out different PKI applications like S/MIME secure email, client side SSL authentication, secure server connection, etc.
- HKUST CA now supports 5 distinct classes of certification services. Each class of certificate provides specific functionality and security features.
- Our digital certificates are conformed to standards and are compatible across different web browsers like Netscape Communicator, Internet Explorer, etc. Nowadays, web browsers support different kind of PKI applications like S/MIME secure emails, SSL, etc.
- Use of smartcard (HKUST Card) as a security token is also supported by our HKUST CA.
