Alll networked computers can access a diverse range of services and applications. These range from general office automation and productivity tools (such as network printing and e-mail) to academic teaching and research facilities to Internet-related applications.
One service, of vital importance to teaching and research is:
Library Online System
Reaching
beyond local holdings, the University Library Online System
allows access to a world of accumulated knowledge. The Online
Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) allows users to consult a broad
range of bibliographic and full-text information. In addition,
its extensive CD-ROM delivery system covers a large range of
subject matter - mainly in the sciences, engineering and business
disciplines. Through working closely with ITSC, access to over
100 different CD-ROM databases throughout the campus network has
been made possible. Also housed in the Library is the networked
Image Retrieval System that can be viewed from designated
desktops. This extensive image data base includes historical
archives of the University's early development, as well as
Chinese art. This is made possible through a Unix-based imaging
system.
Other Major Services and Applications
One important characteristic, available to networked computers, is a bilingual capability - Chinese-English. Increasingly, more and more network services will have this feature.
