Keep The System Up-to-date

This can be done by keeping the default Windows Update settings to install updates automatically. Using Windows 7 or above would also improve security. For application software, enable self-update where available.

Make Sure Firewall Is Enabled

On Windows, user may check the firewall status from Security Center or Action Center.

Install Antivirus Software and Ensure The Latest Virus Signatures Are Used

ITSC offers anti-virus software for Windows to all HKUST staff and students. Check here for details.

Install Only Application Software You Need and Remove Software No Longer In Use

This is to minimize the attack surface.

Stay Aware Of Security
