Enabling SMTP Authentication Support

If you are having your internet connection stated below, you will need to enable the authentication support in your email client:

Please select from the followings in order to enable the authentication support with your email client:

For users with your internet connection via ISP services, you might need to configure your email client to use the Outgoing Mail Server provided by the ISP that you are participating. Please refer to your ISP's help pages.


Netscape Messenger (4.x)

Configure Outgoing Mail Server with Messenger:

  1. From the "Edit" menu on the toolbar, select "Preferences"
  2. Under the "Mail & Newsgroups" category on the left, select "Mail Servers". If you don't see "Mail Servers", click the plus sign (+) to display more categories
  3. In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, double check if it is "smtp.ust.hk"
  4. In the "Outgoing mail server user name" box, type your email address (without the "@ust.hk")
  5. Under "Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TSL for outgoing Messages", select "If Possible"

  6. Click "OK"
Netscape Messenger (7.x)

Configure Outgoing Mail Server with Messenger:

  1. From the "Edit" menu on the toolbar, select "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings"
  2. Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and double check if the Server Name is "smtp.ust.hk"
  3. Select the "User name and password" option and type your "User Name" (without the "@ust.hk")
  4. Under "Use secure connection (SSL)", select "When available"

  5. Click "OK"
Outlook or Outlook Express

Configure Outgoing Mail Serve for Outlook or Outlook Express:

  1. From the Tools menu, select "Accounts"
  2. Click on the "Mail" tab
  3. Select your HKUST Mail account and click "Properties"
  4. Click on the "Server" tab
  5. In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, double check if it is "smtp.ust.hk"
  6. Under "Outgoing Mail Server", check "My server requires authentication". Please note that there is no need to change the Incoming mail server settings (if you are using the IMAP server) i.e.

  7. Click "Settings..."
  8. Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"

  9. Click "OK" to accept the changes
  10. Click on the "Advanced" tab
  11. Select "This mail server requires a secure connection" for "Outgoing mail" server. Select the same option for "Incoming mail" server as well if it is not.

  12. Click "OK" to accept the changes
  13. Close Microsoft Outlook and restart it again
Eudora

Configure Outgoing Mail Server for Eudora:

  1. Click on the "Tools Menu" and select "Options"
  2. Select the "Sending Mail" category
  3. Use the following settings:
  4. Click "OK"

PC-Pine (4.58 or above)

Configure Outgoing Mail Server (with secure connection) with PC-Pine:

  1. Select "Setup" (S) from the Main menu
  2. Select "Config" (C)
  3. Enter smtp-server and inbox-path specific to your account. The settings shown below are specific to the "cctest" account only

  4. Select "Exit Setup" (E) and press "Y" to commit the changes
