Computing Account Format for Newly Admitted
Students

Background

To cope with the 334 reform, the University is moving to a more versatile curriculum design. It is anticipated that our students will have more flexibility in choosing their programs of study.  As such, the existing practice that prefixes a department code (e.g. "bo_" for Biology majors) to the account name of student is no longer adequate to cope with the upcoming changes. In view of this, a new account naming convention will be adopted, starting from the 2009 intake.

New Account Format

The new account name format will be composed of

Initials of First Name + Surname
(or initial of Surname)
+ Dummy Characters
(aa-zz or aaa-zzz)

The maximum length of the account name is 12 characters.

Below are some of the examples:

Example 1: Composed with user's Surname

Student Name: CHAN, Mei Mei Wendy

  1. Initial of the first name : MMW
  2. Surname: CHAN

The generated account name will be "mmwchan" if the name space is available. In case the account name is already occupied, dummy characters will be appended it might become "mmwchanaa", or "mmwchanab" and so on until one is available.

Example 2: Composed with the initial of user's Surname

Student Name: CHRISTENSEN, Claes Erik Patrick

As the combination of initials of first name and surname will exceed the 12 characters limit, the initial of user's surname will be employed:

  1. Initial of the first name : CEP
  2. Initial of Surname: C

The generated account name will be "cepc" if the name space is available. In case the account name is already occupied, dummy characters will be appended it might become "cepcaa", or "cepcab" and so on until one is available.
