Prof Tony F Chan assumed the presidency of HKUST on 1 September 2009.
Prior to joining HKUST, Prof Chan was Assistant Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in charge of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate, which is the largest directorate at NSF. In this position, he guided and managed research funding of about HK$10 billion a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical science, material science, and multidisciplinary activities.
Before this, Prof Chan served the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1986 to 2006, and was promoted to Dean of Physical Sciences in 2001.
Prof Chan received his BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. He pursued postdoctoral research at Caltech, and taught Computer Science at Yale University before joining UCLA.

Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng took office as Acting Vice-President for Academic Affairs on 8 February 2010. He had been Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics since he joined the University in 1996. He was appointed Associate Dean of Science in 1997 and Dean of Science in 2004.
Prof Cheng has demonstrated a strong scholarly record, dedicated service and long-time involvement with the University's academic initiatives. In 1974, Prof Cheng obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley where he studied under Prof Shiing-Shen Chern, a leader in differential geometry who co-developed the Chern-Simons theory. Cheng then became a Post-doctoral Fellow and an Assistant Professor at Princeton University and State University of New York at Stony Brook. He was appointed a Full Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1981, and was also a Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1995 prior to joining HKUST in 1996.
A distinguished mathematician, Prof Cheng possesses substantial teaching and administrative experience, and has demonstrated exemplary leadership throughout his career. His research interests include differential geometry, geometric partial differential equations, and game theory. His remarkable contributions include comparison theorems of Laplacian eigenvalues on Riemannian manifolds.

Prof Yuk-Shan Wong took office as Vice-President for Administration and Business and Professor of Biology on 10 April, 2006. He obtained his PhD in Plant Biochemistry from McGill University of Canada in 1979. Prof Wong returned to Hong Kong in 1980 after one year of post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto. He has taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 1980s. In 1990, he joined HKUST as a founding faculty member of Biology and later took office as Associate Vice-President for Research and Development in 1997. Between 1998 and 2006, Prof Wong was a Vice-President and concurrently a Professor (Chair) of Biological Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong, where he was responsible for the planning and management of manpower, financial and physical resources in support of the academic functions of the university.
Prof Wong's research interest is in environmental biotechnology. He has published several books and more than 130 journal articles in addition to serving as editor of three scientific journals. Prof Wong actively involves in policy making of education and promoting science and technology of Hong Kong. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Environment, and a member of the University Grants Committee. He has also served as Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council, a member of the Education Commission and a member of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation.
Prof Wong is currently the President of the Society of Hong Kong Scholars. He has been elected a deputy of the National People's Congress representing Hong Kong in January 2008.

Prof Matthew Yuen took office as Acting Vice-President for Research and Development on 1 January 2009, concurrently holding the Headship of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Prof Yuen is well known in the area of computer-aided design and has spearheaded the establishment of electronic packaging as a major research area in HKUST. He had been Director of the Technology Transfer Center on secondment from his academic appointment for nine years prior to his current appointment as Head of Mechanical Engineering. His portfolio under the Research and Development branch includes industrial liaison, technology transfer, contract administration, as well as liaison with the Government and funding agencies.
Prof Yuen graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a BSc (Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering and earned his PhD from the University of Bristol. |

Prof Michael M T Loy took office as Acting Dean of Science on 8 February 2010.
Prof Loy earned both his BSc in 1966 and his PhD in 1971 at the University of California at Berkeley. He joined HKUST in 1993 as Professor of Physics and served as Dean of Science from 1998 to 2004. Before joining HKUST, he worked for more than 20 years at IBM's T J Watson Research Center in New York. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
Prof Loy's main research interests include nonlinear optical propagation effects, two-photon coherent transients, nonlinear optical studies of surfaces, and the state-selective studies of molecule-surface interactions. His recent publications include scanning tunneling microscopy study of single atom dynamics on surfaces, photoluminescence study of single nanowires, and optical transient effects in cold atoms. |

Prof Khaled Ben Letaief was appointed Dean of Engineering, effective from 1 September 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1993 as Assistant Professor, and was promoted to the rank of Chair Professor. He has served as head of the department from 2003 to 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief has made remarkable achievements in teaching, research and service. He is the 1998 Michael G Gale Medalist for Distinguished Teaching - the highest teaching award at the University awarded to only one faculty member each year.
Prof Ben Letaief is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of wireless communication. He has been a Fellow of IEEE since 2003 and was elected Vice-President of the IEEE Communications Society in 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in the USA.

Prof Leonard K Cheng was appointed Dean of Business and Management, effective 1 March 2009, after assuming an acting position since 1 July 2007. He joined HKUST in 1992 as one of the founding members of the University, after serving on the faculty of University of Florida in the United States for more than 10 years.
Professor Cheng received his PhD in economics from University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include applied game theory, market structure, technological innovation and imitation, currency crisis, international trade and investment, China's inward and outward FDI, and Chinese technology firms. He is an active researcher and has published many papers in major academic journals. He has served as an associate editor of Journal of International Economics and Pacific Economic Review.
Dedicated to serving the public, he has been an adviser to many organizations locally and regionally. Currently he is a member of the Broadcasting Authority of the HKSAR Government. He was recently appointed by the government as Justice of the Peace.

Prof Lee was appointed Dean of Humanities and Social Science with effect from 1 May 2009.
Prof Lee is an eminent scholar in humanities and social science. His research covers a wide range of disciplines, including Chinese history, Chinese society and economy, comparative demography, sociology of populations, as well as historical sociology, genealogy and health.
Prior to joining HKUST, Prof Lee was with the University of Michigan, serving as Frederick Huetwell Professor of History and Sociology, Research Professor at the Population Studies Center, and Faculty Associate at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. He was also the Director of the University of Michigan-Peking University Joint Institute and from 2003 to 2008 was Director of the University of Michigan Center for Chinese Studies. Previously, Prof Lee spent over two decades at the California Institute of Technology where he was a faculty member in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1982 to 2003.
Prof Lee obtained his PhD in History from University of Chicago in 1983.

Prof Tongxi Yu is currently Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Mainland Programs) and Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Formerly HKUST’s Head of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Dean and Acting Dean of Engineering, he was a professor and the Director of the Solid Mechanics Division at Peking University in 1984-1991, and Reader at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK, in 1992-1995 before he joined HKUST as Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1995.
Prof Yu received his undergraduate and postgraduate education from Peking University. He obtained his PhD degree at the University of Cambridge in 1983.
Professor Yu’s research has been focused on impact dynamics, plasticity, energy absorption, textile and cellular materials and nano-composites. Prof Yu was awarded Doctor of Science by the University of Cambridge in 1995 in recognition of his plasticity study. He received the China Higher Education Science and Technology Award (1st class) in 2001.
Prof Yu is currently the guest professor of a number of top-notch universities in Mainland China and overseas, including the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), Zhejiang University and the University of Manchester.

Prof Kar Yan Tam, currently Chair Professor of Information and Systems Management, has been with the University since 1992. He received his PhD from Purdue University and started off his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He joined HKUST in 1992 as a founding member of the Business School. Prof Tam was the Deputy Head of the Department of Information & Systems Management from 1992 to 1998 and Head of the Department from 2002 to 2005. He was also the Associate Dean of the Business School from 1999 to 2006. From 2005 to 2007, he was on secondment to the Office of Vice-President for Academic Affairs as Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
Prof Tam is well experienced in the work of undergraduate education. As AVPAA, he has been involved in the development of academic development plan as well as in the 3-3-4 conversion planning. In his capacity as the Associate Dean of the Business School from 1999 to 2006, he was responsible for all undergraduate programs in the School. He launched the highly successful Global Business Program in 2000 and had been the Director of the Program through 2006. He was also the Co-director of the dual-degree program in Technology Management from 2002 to 2007. As Director of International and Mainland Students and Programs Office, he has been leading the University's internationalization efforts to recruit top students from the Mainland and overseas.
As a researcher, Prof Tam's interests lie in information technology application and investment. He is currently on the editorial board of a number of IS journals including Information Systems Research. He has also served as a consultant to a number of corporations and government units.
