Prof Tony F Chan assumed the presidency of HKUST on 1 September 2009.
Prior to joining HKUST, Prof Chan was Assistant Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in charge of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate, which is the largest directorate at NSF. In this position, he guided and managed research funding of about HK$10 billion a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical science, material science, and multidisciplinary activities.
Before this, Prof Chan served the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1986 to 2006, and was promoted to Dean of Physical Sciences in 2001.
Prof Chan is an active member of many scientific societies, including Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) where he had served on both the Board of Trustees and the Council, as well as Member of the American Mathematical Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
Prof Chan received his BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. He pursued postdoctoral research at Caltech, and taught Computer Science at Yale University before joining UCLA.
Born and brought up in Hong Kong, Prof Chan attended the Salesian English School and Queen's College in Hong Kong before furthering his studies in the US. |

Prof Wei Shyy took office as Provost on 23 August 2010.
An internationally renowned scientist, scholar and administrator, and a distinguished educator, Prof Shyy obtained his BS degree from Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan in 1977, and his MSE and PhD degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1981 and 1982 respectively. He was Research Scientist at the General Electric Research and Development Center in New York from 1983 to 1988. From 1988 to 2004, he was on the faculty of the University of Florida. In 2005, he joined his alma mater, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
Prof Shyy is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Among the many awards for his research and professional contributions are the AIAA 2003 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award, the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award, and The Engineers' Council (Sherman Oaks, California) 2009 Distinguished Educator Award, the latter in recognition of his "outstanding contributions to the engineering profession as a teacher, researcher, mentor to students and staff, and leader in working together with industry". Prof Shyy also participated in a number of review teams to assess productivity and performance of US and international government agencies and universities.
Prof Shyy has supervised more than 40 PhD students and mentored a large number of postdoctoral fellows. |

Vice-President for Administration and Business

Prof Yuk-Shan Wong took office as Vice-President for Administration and Business and Professor of Biology on 10 April, 2006. He obtained his PhD in Plant Biochemistry from McGill University of Canada in 1979. Prof Wong returned to Hong Kong in 1980 after one year of post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto. He has taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 1980s. In 1990, he joined HKUST as a founding faculty member of Biology and later took office as Associate Vice-President for Research and Development in 1997. Between 1998 and 2006, Prof Wong was a Vice-President and concurrently a Professor (Chair) of Biological Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong, where he was responsible for the planning and management of manpower, financial and physical resources in support of the academic functions of the university.
Prof Wong's research interest is in environmental biotechnology. He has published several books and more than 130 journal articles in addition to serving as editor of three scientific journals. Prof Wong actively involves in policy making of education and promoting science and technology of Hong Kong. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Environment, and a member of the University Grants Committee. He has also served as Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council, a member of the Education Commission and a member of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation.
Prof Wong is currently the President of the Society of Hong Kong Scholars. He has been elected a deputy of the National People's Congress representing Hong Kong in January 2008. |

Vice-President for Institutional Advancement

Dr Eden Y Woon took office as Vice-President for Institutional Advancement on 1 November 2010.
Prior to joining HKUST, Dr Woon was with the Li & Fung Group for 3 years in Shanghai. He was the Managing Director of Li & Fung Group's China Corporate Office and Managing Director of Toys "R" Us China. From 2006-2007, Dr Woon was a Vice-President of Starbucks Coffee Company in China. Dr Woon was the CEO of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the oldest and largest business organization in Hong Kong, from 1997 to 2006.
Dr Woon served in the US Air Force until 1993 when he retired as a Colonel. He taught Mathematics for 6 years at the US Air Force Academy - becoming an Associate Professor. He acted as China advisor to the US Secretary of Defense from 1989 to 1994. He was the Executive Director of the Seattle-based Washington State China Relations Council from 1994 to 1997.
Dr Woon received his BA degree from the University of Iowa and his MA, MS, and PhD degrees, all in Mathematics, from the University of Washington in Seattle. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Prof Joseph Hun-wei Lee took office as Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies at HKUST on 1 November 2010.
Prof Lee grew up in Hong Kong and obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1969-1977). He joined the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 1980, where he rose to Redmond Chair Professor of Civil Engineering in 1995. At HKU, he was Dean of Engineering from 2000 to 2003, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President from 2004-2010.
Prof Lee's research revolves around the use of hydraulics to solve environmental problems, in particular the prediction and control of water quality. He is Editor of the Journal of Hydro-environment Research and Vice-President of the International Association for Hydro-environment Engineering and Research - IAHR (2007-2011), and has served as expert consultant on numerous hydro-environmental projects. He serves on the Advisory Council on the Environment and the Construction Industry Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government, as well as advisory bodies in Scotland, Germany and Singapore. He is Honorary Professor of Nankai University, and a member of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Prof Lee is the first Asia based academic to receive the Hunter Rouse Hydraulic Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (2009). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom, and Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. He and his research team were bestowed a State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Second Class) 2010 by the Chinese State Council.

Professor Nancy Yuk-Yu Ip, BSc, PhD |

Prof Nancy Ip was appointed Dean of Science on 1 February 2011.
Prof Ip joined HKUST in 1993 in her early academic career and rose through the ranks to Chair Professor in 2005. She served as Associate Dean of Science from 1998 to 2005, Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute from 1996 to 2008, and Head of Biochemistry from 2000 to 2009. Currently, she is also Chair Professor in the Division of Life Science and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience.
With a PhD in Pharmacology from Harvard University, Prof Ip is internationally recognized for her discoveries in neurotrophic factors and their potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. She has published 200 scientific papers, with more than 13,500 SCI citations and holds 20 patents in her areas of research.
Prof Ip is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. Her numerous awards include the Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship (1998), the National Natural Science Award (2003), and the L'OREAL-UNESCO for Women in Science Award (2004).

Prof Khaled Ben Letaief was appointed Dean of Engineering, effective from 1 September 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1993 as Assistant Professor, and was promoted to the rank of Chair Professor. He has served as head of the department from 2003 to 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief has made remarkable achievements in teaching, research and service. He is the 1998 Michael G Gale Medalist for Distinguished Teaching - the highest teaching award at the University awarded to only one faculty member each year.
Prof Ben Letaief is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of wireless communication. He has been a Fellow of IEEE since 2003 and was elected Vice-President of the IEEE Communications Society in 2009.
Prof Ben Letaief received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in the USA. |

Professor Leonard K Cheng was appointed Dean of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 1 March 2009. He joined HKUST in 1992 as one of the founding members of the University, after serving on the faculty of University of Florida in the United States for more than 10 years.
Professor Cheng received his PhD in economics from University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include applied game theory, market structure, technological innovation and imitation, currency crisis, international trade and investment, China’s inward and outward FDI, and Chinese technology firms. He is an active researcher and has published many papers in major academic journals. He has served as an associate editor of Journal of International Economics and Pacific Economic Review.
Dedicated to serving the public, he has been an adviser to many organizations locally and regionally, including the Broadcasting Authority and the Provisional Minimum Wage Commission of the HKSAR Government. Currently, he is a Member of the Statistics Advisory Board and Hong Kong Port Development Council of the HKSAR Government, a Non-Executive Director of the Securities and Futures Commission and a Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research.

Prof Lee was appointed Dean of Humanities and Social Science with effect from 1 May 2009.
Prof Lee is an eminent scholar in humanities and social science. His research covers a wide range of disciplines, including Chinese history, Chinese society and economy, comparative demography, sociology of populations, as well as historical sociology, genealogy and health.
Prior to joining HKUST, Prof Lee was with the University of Michigan, serving as Frederick Huetwell Professor of History and Sociology, Research Professor at the Population Studies Center, and Faculty Associate at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. He was also the Director of the University of Michigan-Peking University Joint Institute and from 2003 to 2008 was Director of the University of Michigan Center for Chinese Studies. Previously, Prof Lee spent over two decades at the California Institute of Technology where he was a faculty member in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1982 to 2003.
Prof Lee obtained his PhD in History from University of Chicago in 1983. |

Prof Lionel Ni is Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School, Chair Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Director of the Ministry of Education / Microsoft Research Asia IT Key Laboratory at HKUST.
Prof Ni joined HKUST in 2002 as Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science. Prior to joining the University, he was Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University. He was also the co-founder and CEO of CC&T Technologies, Inc., Michigan and a program director at the US NSF. A fellow of IEEE and a highly cited researcher, Prof Ni has graduated 40 PhD students. He is the chief scientist of the Ministry of Science and Technology 973 Program on wireless sensor networks.
Prof Ni's research interests include supercomputing, computer networking, distributed systems, mobile computing, sensor networks, extra-large scale storage systems, and data mining. |

Associate Provost and Dean of Students Professor Kar Yan Tam, BS, MS, PhD |

Prof Kar Yan Tam, currently Chair Professor of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management, has been with the University since 1992. He received his PhD from Purdue University and started off his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He joined HKUST in 1992 as a founding member of the Business School. Prof Tam was the Deputy Head of the Department of Information & Systems Management from 1992 to 1998 and Head of the Department from 2002 to 2005. He was also the Associate Dean of the Business School from 1999 to 2006. From 2005 to 2007, he was on secondment to the Office of Vice-President for Academic Affairs as Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs.
Prof Tam is well experienced in the work of undergraduate education. As AVPAA, he has been involved in the development of academic development plan as well as in the 3-3-4 conversion planning. In his capacity as the Associate Dean of the Business School from 1999 to 2006, he was responsible for all undergraduate programs in the School. He launched the highly successful Global Business Program in 2000 and had been the Director of the Program through 2006. He was also the Co-director of the dual-degree program in Technology Management from 2002 to 2007. As Director of International and Mainland Students and Programs Office, he has been leading the University's internationalization efforts to recruit top students from the Mainland and overseas.
As a researcher, Prof Tam's interests lie in information technology application and investment. He is currently on the editorial board of a number of IS journals. He has also served as a consultant to a number of corporations and government units. |
