SARS Updates in Hong Kong  JJJ

Dear ADCHEM 2003 Corresponding Authors,

I am writing to update you on the situation of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong. I am pleased to report to you that WHO travel advisory has been lifted for Hong Kong since 23 May, and that yesterday (23 June), WHO has taken Hong Kong off from the SARS infected area list. For your information, the criteria for removing from the list is continuous 20 days free from any local infection. Also earlier, Guangdong, Hong Kong's neighbor in China, has been taken off from the SARS infected area list. I am sure that Taiwan and Beijing will soon have their SARS situation under full control too.

With this information, I believe that you do not have to worry about SARS for your visit to
Hong Kong for ADCHEM 2003 on the postponed date of 11-14 January 2004, as announced in our last communication. We will continue working hard to ensure that you will have a safe and enjoyable ADCHEM 2003. Kindly pass this message to your co-authors and friends. Thank you.

Best regards,

Prof. Furong Gao
Chair, NOC

Postponement of ADCHEM 2003

Dear ADCHEM 2003 corresponding authors and friends,

Thank you for your interest and support in ADCHEM 2003. In view of the recent situation and outbreak of the Atypical Pneumonia (SARS) in Hong Kong and around the World, we have decided to postpone the ADCHEM 2003 symposium to 11-14 January 2004, with the opening reception in the evening of January 11, 2004.

The chairs of NOC and IPC have made this decision mainly taking into consideration the concerns and the well being of the conference participants despite that the situation of Atypical Pneumonia (SARS) is stabilizing in Hong Kong. Universities in Hong Kong already have their classes resumed from the week of April 14. Although we believe that the situation should be under control in a near future, postponing the symposium by six months will help to make the participants feel more comfortable and less concerned of coming to Hong Kong.

Besides, the weather of Hong Kong in January will be more enjoyable than that in June. It will normally be sunny, clear and comfortable. For those of you who plan to attend both ADCHEM and PSE, you are probably interested to know that PSE will also be postponed to take place just before our symposium.

For those who have already registered, there is no need to submit another registration form unless there is any change of information or decision. The early registration period will be extended to October 10, 2003. If you have already registered and cannot participate in the meeting in January you can withdraw your registration and the registration fee will be refunded.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this postponement may have caused. We can assure you that everything else of ADCHEM 2003 will remain unchanged but better. For updates, please visit the website at:

Kindly please forward this email to your co-authors and colleagues. Thanks again for your contribution to the symposium. We look forward to meeting you all in Hong Kong in 11-14 January.

Best regards,

Prof. Frank Allgower, IPC Chair
