Professor Wessling joined HKUST as the Dean of Students on August 1, 2016. He holds a BA from Princeton University and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley — both in the field of Slavic Languages and Literatures. He spent the early part of his career at Stanford University, initially as a Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow responsible for designing and implementing innovative interdisciplinary courses. He later became the Academic Director of Stern Hall under the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education where he managed aspects of Stanford’s academic and co-curricular life in residence. He was subsequently appointed Associate Director of Stanford’s Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies, with the responsibility of managing Center operations, including academic and student affairs for the affiliated undergraduates and postgraduates. From 2013-2016, Professor Wessling served as Associate Master and Chief of Students of Choi Kai Yau College and Stanley Ho East Asia College at the University of Macau, where he played a key role in developing the Residential College system and in managing all aspects of student co-curricular and academic life in the residential colleges.
As the Dean of Students, Professor Wessling aspires to cultivate “student entrepreneurship”; promote healthy living and resilience; create a climate of increasing global exposure and internationalization in student life; and foster integrative learning and a transformative educational experience for students.
