HKUST Holds Opening Ceremony for Lee Shau Kee Campus and Lee Shau Kee Business Building

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held an opening ceremony for the Lee Shau Kee Campus and Lee Shau Kee Business Building today, marking a milestone in the University's development and its future education and research.

Dr Lee Shau Kee, Chairman of Henderson Land Group, has been a long-standing supporter of HKUST. He is a Founding Member of the University Court and holds an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from HKUST. Dr Lee has supported the University's development through the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, including a donation of HK$400 million to advance the University's position as a global education and research leader. In honor of this generosity, the University has named the new campus extension and the academic building on the campus the Lee Shau Kee Campus and Lee Shau Kee Business Building respectively.

Dr Lee said: "When I officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Lee Shau Kee Campus in 2009, the land was a bare plot. In the blink of an eye, these landmark buildings have been built, creating a milestone development that is set to benefit many generations to come. I sincerely hope that both HKUST faculty members and students, as well as scholars from around the world will fully utilize the new campus and its facilities to achieve academic excellence that can benefit society at large."

Dr Marvin Cheung, Chairman of the University Council, thanked Dr Lee for his generosity and support for the University. He said that HKUST Business School has established top level international standing. The School has nurtured business leaders in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the world, who possess a global outlook, professional knowledge, and integrity. The opening of the Lee Shau Kee Campus and Lee Shau Kee Business Building signifies a new era in HKUST's development. The University will continue to foster its innovative spirit and enhance students' competitiveness amid the rapidly changing business environment to promote social and economic development.

President Prof Tony Chan also expressed his gratitude to Dr Lee for his donation. He praised Dr Lee for his vision and enthusiasm for education. He said that HKUST would strive to fully utilize the state-of-the-art learning and research environment to boost undergraduate and postgraduate education and create a cutting-edge platform for faculty members to further advance the University's global impact. The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program has been ranked the world's No.1 five times by the Financial Times . The School's MBA program has been ranked among the world's top 10 by the Financial Times . HKUST Business School has also recently launched new programs to widen its global vision. These programs include a pioneering World Bachelor in Business, in partnership with the University of Southern California in the US and Bocconi University in Italy, and a new Master of Science in International Management, together with CEMS, a global alliance in management education.

President Chan said that HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study(IAS) has been actively working toward transforming Hong Kong into a global intellectual hub. IAS brings together world-renowned scholars and business leaders to share their expert opinions at internationally acclaimed conferences, such as the Gordon Research Conferences, and propel forward impactful discussions on significant issues.

Dr Lee officiated at today's opening ceremony, where he was joined by his eldest son Mr Lee Ka Kit and youngest son Mr Lee Ka Shing. Also officiating at the ceremony were, from HKUST, Council Chairman Dr Marvin Cheung, Court Chairman Dr John Chan, President Prof Tony Chan, Council Vice-Chairman Mr Martin Tang, Executive Vice-President and Provost Prof Wei Shyy, Vice-President for Administration and Business Prof Yuk-shan Wong, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement Dr Eden Woon, Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Joseph Lee, Business School Acting Dean Prof Kalok Chan, and HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study Director Prof Henry Tye.

Located atop the HKUST main campus, the Lee Shau Kee Campus occupies an area of about 10 hectares. Main buildings include the seven-storey Lee Shau Kee Business Building, the five-storey HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study Lo Ka Chung Building, and the soon-to-be-built Conference Tower. Both of the new buildings have lecture theaters offering 200 seats, fully furnished classrooms, multi-functional conference rooms and seminar rooms, among other facilities. The buildings also offer ample open space to stimulate active academic exchange and interaction among faculty members and students.
