BizInsight@HKUST Seminar Features Nobel Laureate Prof Sir Christopher Pissarides on Brexit Impact

2016-09-29

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) hosted the BizInsight@HKUST Seminar today. The Seminar featured Prof Sir Christopher Pissarides, the 2010 Nobel Laureate in Economics and IAS Helmut & Anna Pao Sohmen Professor-at-Large of HKUST, to provide insights into the Brexit impact on global economies.

“The HKUST Business School is a leader in global business education and committed to sharing its research findings and facilitating an informed discussion on topical issues,” said Prof Kar Yan Tam, Dean of the HKUST Business School. “The BizInsight@HKUST Seminar Series provides an excellent opportunity for our faculty to exchange knowledge with the world’s leading scholars and experts from different organizations, with a view to contributing to the economic and social advancement of the region.”

In his talk, Prof Pissarides said that the Brexit progress in renegotiating relations so far has been very slow. The uncertainty over outcomes is likely to hurt the economy, and over the next few years we might see a gradual shifting of international investment and business from the UK to Europe, and also a slowdown in both UK and Europe’s economic growth.

His keynote speech was followed by a panel discussion with Ms Jo Hawley, Director of UK Trade and Investment of the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong, and Mr Nicholas Kwan, Director of Research of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, bringing a diverse perspective to an audience of over 150 business leaders and guests from the HKUST community.

Formerly known as the Business Insights Presentation Series, the rebranded BizInsight@HKUST Seminar Series has been organized by the HKUST Business School since 2009. The initiative provides an interactive exchange platform for our faculty to offer their insights into business practices and engage with the broader community. Mostly held in our conveniently located facility in Central, the Series has hosted over 40 seminars and attracted more than 1,800 participants so far.
